FAQ – Film Studies MA

1). Should I have a BA degree in cinema in order to apply for the MA in Film Studies?

No, we welcome all university graduates who hold a BA degree.

2). What should I write about in the cover letter?

The cover letter should consist of a short presentation of the research area the candidate is interested in. The students have the flexibility of changing their research topic during the program.

3). What should I include in the application file?

The portfolio should consist of 3 original written work samples, regardless if they’ve been published (essays, articles etc.) or not (research papers in the case of Visual Arts, Photography, Film graduates etc. or exam papers in the case of Social Sciences, Humanities, Philosophy graduates etc.). The work samples are not required to be on a topic explicitly pertaining to cinema, but it is advised that they be on a relatable topic.

4). Is the online registration mandatory?

Yes, you have to register online anytime from July 16 to September 10 here.

5). Is the online registration enough?

No, the online registration is not enough. After the (mandatory) online registration (July 16 – September 10), you will have to bring a physical copy of the application file (September 9 –10, from 9:30 AM to 2 PM) at UNATC, Matei Voievod street, no. 75-77. 6). What does the admission exam consist of?

The admission is an assessment interview based on the CV, portfolio and cover letter submitted by the candidate.

7). When is the admission exam?

The admission exam is scheduled to take place on September 12, 2021.

8). Can I apply for the Film Studies MA at UNATC if I’ve already applied for a different MA at a different university? Could I choose where I want to enrol after the admission?

Yes, you can also apply for the Film Studies MA. In case you register at a different university before the admission, please bring a certificate from the other university proving that your original documents are in their possession.

9). Can I attend two MA programs at the same time?

Yes, you can attend two MA programs at the same time. If your admission grades qualify you for publicly funded seats at both MA programs, then, according to the Romanian law, you will have to decide for which of the two you will pay the tuition fee. Should you choose to pay the tuition fee for the Film Studies MA, please note that there are several exemptions from fees at out university. 10). Can I enrol for the MA in Film Studies if I already hold another MA degree?

Yes, you can. If you paid the tuition fee for the previously graduated program and the admission grade has qualified you for a publicly funded seat at the MA in Film Studies, then your tuition will be free. If, on the other hand, your seat at the other program was publicly funded, then you will have to pay certain tuition fees now. 11). At what time during the day are the MA classes scheduled?

The exact schedule of each individual course can be determined together with the adjacent professors at the beginning of each school year. If, for instance, some of the MA students have a full-time job, the timetable might change accordingly.

12). Could I join the classes from the Film Studies MA online next year (2021/2022), given the COVID-19 pandemic?

Depending on the experts’ and authorities’ recommendations, we are both ready to safely resume our classes in school and/or to continue online. From the beginning of the pandemic, all our professors have successfully transferred their classes online on platforms such as Google Classroom, Google Meet or Zoom. 13). Will it say that I’m a graduate in “Film Studies” on my MA degree diploma?

On the MA degree diploma and the MA degree diploma supplement it will say that you’re a graduate of “Film Studies”, field of “Cinema and Media”.

14). Does the program help students get internships or research grants?

The MA students can apply for Erasmus+ mobility and research grants and study at partner universities such as FAMU (Prague), Babelsberg Film Academy (Berlin), LUCA School of Arts (Brussels), Université Bordeaux Montaigne (Bordeaux), Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias (Lisbon), University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest or the The Polish National Film, Television and Theatre School in Łódź. 15). Can I join a PhD program in film studies after graduation?

Yes, after graduation you can apply for a PhD program in cinema and media studes at the National University of Theatre and Film.

16). What job opportunities are there for film studies graduates?

The MA program in film studies helps students further develop their interests and knowledge in the field of cinema and media. Other than pursuing an academic career in film studies or in interdisciplinary research with a focus on media studies, our graduates have the necessary skills to work in cultural and artistic institutions, education and curation, as well as in media industries or in festival and event management. The skills acquired here in media communication, project research and management will come in handy in other professional fields, as well.
